The Top 100 Songs You've (Probably) Never Heard - 2008

Alla Gamla X
Face-84
Sweden

This song has the feel of something The Bangles might have performed. However, it’s the unique lyrics that really make this song interesting. For example, she sings of keeping all of her former lovers in a chicken coop in her attic so she can go up and slap them whenever she gets the urge. Other crazy ex-girlfriend tendencies follow.

Complice
Miodio
San Marino

The world needs more mellow rock songs in Italian. Apparently, the world also needs more hairstylists. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait at least another year for more Sammarinese goodness as the world’s oldest sovereign state is sitting out from ESC 2009 due to the ongoing financial crisis.
Fun fact: San Marino’s main source of income is tourism. Another source of income comes from the sale of postage stamps.

Boys and Perfume

A simple song about something that feels so foreign in these troubled times: contentedness.

Game Over
Esther
Belgian

The performance of this pop piece provides us with a rare chance to partake in profound philosophical ponderings (and alliteration). Much like the chicken and the egg, one must wonder which came first: the song or the bicycle. Given the amount of time devoted to the guy on the bike, it is only reasonable to assume that the song was created around the idea of having some dude do bike tricks on stage. However, I seriously doubt that the Belgians would ever do something so silly; well, at least the Walloons wouldn’t.

This is one of several examples of performances involving modes of transportation. Others include the Moldovan scooter and the Danish airport inter-terminal transit buggy.

Partir et Revenir
Iva Frühlingová
Czech Republic

Sorry about the delay in posting but I’ve been recovering from last week’s season premiere of Lost. Speaking of being lost, I think poor Iva has forgotten she’s in the Czech Republic…where they speak Czech (and quite well, too).

Forever or Never
Cinema Bizzare
Germany

This looks and sounds familiar, but I can’t quite place it. I wonder if the inspiration for the video was a Japanese lodging establishment of some sort.

I am not permitted to embed this video, but you may click here if you wish to see it (which is what I recommend).

Hinterm Ozean
(Carolin) Fortenbacher
Germany

It’s a great song and a good performance, but what I really love about this is the fact that the host and producers only refer to her by her last name…and what an awesome last name it is.

Thank You
Amy Diamond
Sweden

Annoying? Yes. Questionable vocal ability? Yeah. Smug sense of superiority? Definitely. Huge chance of this becoming a hit single? Undoubtedly. If Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus has taught us anything, it’s that young girls will buy anything produced by their peers. Consider this: Cyrus has had 2 top ten singles and 3 number one albums. Surely there’s room for her Swedish counterpart (Who, by the way, claims 6 top ten singles and 5 top ten albums in her homeland).

Missä Miehet Ratsastaa
Teräsbetoni
Finland

I know what you’re thinking: “Where is the Finnish heavy metal we’ve come to love over the past few years?” Well, here it is.

Fun fact: 1789 days = 4 years and 328 days. In other words, if they started touring on January 1, 2008, they would not finish until November 24, 2012. (Note that this includes 2 leap years; it is possible that they would not finish touring until the 25th or 26th of November, depending on what year they first started.)

Chokolina
Orion
Moldova

Another shining example of Moldovan pop, Chokolina has the feel of a laid-back eurodance track. It feels like a slow version of this.

Regrettable Trend of 2008: Bad Songs About Heroes

Superhero
Sandra Oxenryd
Poland

I don’t blame her for over performing this song to within an inch of its life; she was only trying to make something out of nothing.

Super Hero

Believe it or not, this is not a high school talent show.
