Era Stupendo
Paolo Meneguzzi
Switzerland
Warning: This song may cause spontaneous dancing.*
*Not really, but apparently, no one told the extras in the video (see 1:20).
Fun Fact: Interestingly, Paolo's last name sounds like something rather vulgar in Serbian.

Hold On, Be Strong
Maria Haukaas Storeng
Norway
Aside from a questionable lyric at the beginning (“catch you off guard like bad crimes”), this is a pretty solid pop effort; especially considering the writer was 15 year old when she penned this. ‘HOBS,’ as I like to call it, has a very soulful feel to it, which is a popular trend in music right now.

Let Me Love You
Tamara feat. Vrčak & Adrian
FYR Macedonia
One of the many great things about the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia is that they aren’t afraid to send something modern and of excellent quality to Eurovision. Kudos to them.
You may recognize Tamara from last year’s list, where she placed #67.

Fullkomið Líf/This Is My Life
Eurobandið
Iceland
In my opinion, this was one of the most interesting songs of last year. Why? Because we could observe it as it evolved from an indie/club tune in Icelandic to a somewhat overproduced mainstream dance song in English. Over the course of several months, we watched as they tweaked elements of the song and performance to better fit their idea of what the song should be. It was a rare peak into the music industry and the grooming of a single. The video below is the original version but you can also view the final version here.

Noc Kupały
Żywiołak
Poland
Remember my short, bouncy friend that I mentioned a couple of posts ago? Well, for some reason this song also reminds me of her. Have a happy birthday Forensic!
Also have a wonderful Friday the 13th!

Hur Svårt Kan Det Va?
Linda Bengtzing
Sweden
‘Hur Svårt Kan Det Va?’ (How hard can it be?) is about a woman who’ll change anything about herself to become more desirable to some other individual. Admittedly, this song is very similar in subject matter and sound to ‘Grace Kelly’ (which did crack the US chart a few years ago). However, it’s probably different enough that most won’t care. Besides, Americans prefer female soloists to male pop stars so this song could go even higher than Mika’s song which peaked at #75.

La' Mig Være
The Dreams
Denmark
Finally, a rock song about wanting to be left alone; why has no one thought of this before?
Also, if you’re going to vandalize government property, don’t carry around something that will help distinguish you from others in your peer group, such as an electric guitar.

Ice Cold Story
Iiris Vesik
Estonia
I have a particularly short, bouncy friend who loves to write. This song reminds me of something she would pen.

Under Mitt Tunna Skinn
Patrik Isaksson
Sweden
This song has absolutely nothing to do with fish; but skin, on the other hand, it does.
Fun fact: there are 31 Long John Silver’s restaurants in Singapore.

Disappear
No Angels
Germany
This song, which peaked at #4 in Germany, is standard early 21st century girl-group fare. Even the video is what one would expect for a song called “Disappear”. Commercially, this is a good thing and a song like this could easily find a home on top 40 radio, even if it is somewhat dated.

I Lågornas Sken
Nordman
Sweden
Everyone loves a song about burning accused witches! I Lågornas Sken, which translates as “In the Light of the Flames”, is about a 17 year-old girl who is set aflame because two children witnessed her partying with the devil.

I Feel the Same Way
Sandrine
Belgium
I could easily write a sizeable paragraph about the potential of this song, but let’s be honest; the real star here is the Belgian in the cowboy hat at 2:03.
