The Top 100 Songs You've (Probably) Never Heard - 2007

No, No, No
Svetla Ivanova
Bulgaria

At number 94 is a Bulgarian track that sounds like it was released ten years ago. Although it is highly unlikely that No No No will find much mainstream success, it could still prove to be popular in the clubs. In fact, it has all of the necessary requirements to be a hit on the dance charts. Generic, pulsing beat…check, repetitive lyrics…check, siren effects…check. Unfortunately, I could not find a video of the Bulgarian studio version of the song so you’ll have to soldier through the live English version. I would like to take the time to apologize in advance.

The Top 100 Songs You've (Probably) Never Heard - 2007

Vertigo
Olivia Lewis
Malta

Well...something had to be #95.
It's catchy. It's Maltese (everyone loves Malta!) It has a video that looks like someone actually put effort into making it. Unfortunately, the music video is a dying art form which no one pays attention to anymore and the song itself isn't strong enough to carry it far. But who knows, with the right promotion and a little bit of luck, this could become a minor summer hit.
(I still have no clue what is implied by "It's feelin' like I've become indigo.")

Don't Judge Me
Bikini
Poland

As far as angry Polish rock songs go, Don't Judge Me is fairly laid back and leans more towards pop. Although rock purists may not find this too appealing, its half in-your-face, half incoherent lyrics are just the kind thing that angsty 14 year old girls love to belt into their hairbrush while taking a break from writing diary entries about how the world just doesn't understand them. And since teenage girls seem to be the only ones buying albums anymore, this song has chart potential.

Listen to Love
Jacob Andersen
Denmark

This pleasant soft-rock song is a tad on the cliché side (but what song in this genre isn't?) and stands no real chance of threatening the top of the mainstream singles charts unless the early 1990s brand of rock makes a comeback. That being said, it could do well on the adult contemporary chart and find its way into heavy rotation at your local dentist's office. And, let's be honest, this is way better than Michael Bolton or Kenny G or Celine Dion or...

Je Veux Tout
Charlotte Becquin
France

France had an unusually strong national selection in 2007 and as a result, several French songs made this list. The first that we'll encounter is Je Veux Tout. This song has a somewhat modern chick-rock vibe and it certainly would have very little problem becoming a minor hit, at least with an English version. It's a little too pop to go all the way to the top of the charts in a market already crowded with female soloists, but that wouldn't prevent it from making some money in an overplayed car commercial.

Oče (Father)
Diona Dim Team
Slovenia

As you may have noticed, this is the second Slovenian song out of two total so far. I can assure you, this is only a coincidence. As for the song, it is a moving number performed by a lovely woman with a beautiful, low voice. Although hit pop songs are rarely performed in this register, it may be unique enough to chart in North America (example: Crash Test Dummies-Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm which made it to number 4 in the U.S.). Novelty combined with the singer's amazing vocal ability (which is important to American consumers) could help make this the dramatic and moody ballad that charges up the U.S. Hot 100 during a dreary winter.

Virtual Girl
Teja Haver
Slovenia

Yeah...It's campy, tacky, and trashy, but there's no denying that it has a good chance to be a minor hit Stateside. Following in the footsteps of overtly sexual Eurotrash that came before it (think Barbie Girl by Aqua which peaked at #7 in the U.S.), Virtual Girl could easily become a summer hit for Teja Haver before she fades into oblivion, occasionally making appearances on VH-1's list shows.

In the beginning...

Welcome to my blog. For a brief description, see above.

In 2006, I decided to make a "Top 50" list to amuse myself and my friends. The idea came to me one day when I was attempting to come up with new ways to procrastinate. I decided to combine two of my loves: Eurovision and Microsoft Excel, and compile, rank, and rate hundreds of songs that were in some way associated with the Eurovision Song Contest. Unlike other lists (which I assume exist somewhere), I decided to base my rankings on both quality and possible mass appeal in the North American market. (Anyone can tell you that these rarely are the same thing.) I believe that, if marketed correctly, many of the songs could chart in the United States and Canada, places which, for the most part, have no contact with the ESC. Needless to say, I had so much fun making the list in 2006, that I doubled its size for 2007. While I'm busy starting the process over again for 2008, I'd thought I'd share last year's list with you. While you may not enjoy all of the songs (some are downright awful), hopefully, you'll find the journey amusing. So, now I present to you The Top 100 Songs You've (Probably) Never Heard - 2007 edition.
