Chicken Rodeo
Dusty Cowshit
Norway

Norway has always been a little odd. Of course, this isn’t a bad thing, especially when it comes to making bizarre songs about chicken rodeos. This song could easily become a quirky, country-flavored hit like “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy” (#56 US Hot 100, #11 US Country) or “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy” (#66 US Hot 100, #11 US Country)*.

Dancing Lasha Tumbai
Verka Serduchka
Ukraine

It’s hard to imagine this not becoming a novelty hit in the United States. It is instantly catchy and is certainly unique. The charts are aching for something nonsensical and fun and this song would certainly fill that void. However, the very nature of the song seems to suggest that the most Verka can hope for is to be a one-hit-wonder. (Question: How cool would it be if the dance in the video became the latest dance craze? Answer: Pretty freakin’ sweet.)

Crazy
Morandi & Wassabi
Romania

This is a middle-of-the-road pop song. Although there is nothing bad about it, it’s certainly not anything to write home about. So, I won't.

Say You Would
Toni Dimitrova & Goresht Pyasak
Bulgaria

Say You Would is a Bulgarian song that has a country duet feel to it (you can tell it’s a country song by the use of the phrase “down the line”). It’s no secret that country-western music has a huge market in North America and I have no doubt that this song can find its way onto American radio. Unfortunately, I could find no video for this song, but you can still listen to it below by clicking on "Track Details" at the bottom of the player if the play button does not work.

Are You Ready?
Stian Joneid
Norway

As proof that no genre bias exists on the list, I submit to you Are You Ready? by Stian Joneid. This feel-good pop song about the beginning of spring has a contemporary Christian vibe to it. (Billboard, which releases the official music charts in the United States, has no fewer than 3 charts dedicated to contemporary Christian music.) If the song is marketed towards this audience, it could do surprisingly well. In fact, it’s not uncommon for albums in this genre to be certified platinum (sales of one million) in the U.S. In addition, fans of this genre tend to be loyal, which could lead to a sustained career filled with album sales in the millions. If only the song were about Jesus…

Merhaba
Julie Lund
Denmark

Merhaba tells the story of a Danish girl who falls in love with a boy who emigrated from the Middle East (his family went to Denmark to find freedom and peace). The whole song seems to be an effort by the Danes to improve relations with Muslims after the cartoon debacle of a few years ago, but I have a feeling that, if anything, the painful rap section just made things worse.

Warning: this song is extremely catchy.

Hooked on You
Infinity
Norway

Speaking of the 1990s… Hooked on You has late 20th century dance track written all over it. The song is instantly catchy yet instantly forgettable like most club hits from last decade. However, as Nineties nostalgia picks up steam over the next few years, songs like this will undoubtedly have their moment in the sun again, however brief it may be. I’ve included the live performance below for you to watch. Clearly, the theme for the staging was Candy Land on crack.

Creator
Monica Hjelle
Norway

Like number 90, Creator is another inoffensive ballad. Unlike number 90, this has a chance to do well, at least on the adult contemporary charts. Its laid-back sound and somewhat introspective lyrics are perfect for easy listening radio, and it would fit in quite nicely with the smooth jazz sounds of the 1990s. As a bonus, there is no tacky sax solo anywhere in sight.

Mon étoile
Jennifer Chevallier
France

Admittedly, this pleasant French ballad doesn’t stand much of a chance to be a huge success in North America, but anything is possible. The main reason this song makes the list, besides the fact that I like it, is its video which can only be described as the most French thing to come out of last year (by the way, that’s not a bad thing).

LovePower
The KMGs
Belgium

In 2007, the world was in desperate need of some 1970s style and a feel-good hit. LovePower answered that call with its happy sound that is impossible not to bop along with. Bonus points were awarded for the amusing use of voice modulation technology. (In case you were wondering, my complex mathematical formula for determining the rankings originally placed this song outside of the top one hundred, but the people’s voices did not go unheard and this was bumped up to a more respectable 91.)

Fool For You
KariZma
Bulgaria

Bulgaria’s second entry on the list is an ethno-pop duet with the back-and-forth style between the two singers which is all the rage in modern music. It may not be as in-your-face as similar ditties, but it has a certain quality about it that makes it endearing. The video for Fool For You is an interesting clip about a medieval fur trapper/pirate marrying the Bulgarian Maya Rudolph and then burning to death…or something like that.

I Like It Loud
Natasza Urbańska
Poland

This piece of Polish pop would certainly feel at home on North American Top-40 radio. Its lyrics are simple and it makes the listener want to move along with the music. Needless to say, I Like It Loud has great chart potential. Interestingly enough, the accompanying music video is exactly what I’d expect a Polish Old Navy commercial to look like.
