This is a classic example of a double entendre. On the surface, the song seems to be about home repairs, however, it can also be interpreted as being about masturbation. For example, the first three words of the song’s title are sung quickly to sound like “onani”, the Swedish word for masturbation. By the way, the whole title translates as “(Oh) When You Take It into Your Own Hands”. Songs about self-love have found success before on the U.S. charts. (E.g. Billy Idol’s “Dancing with Myself” and The Divinyls’ “I Touch Myself” which peaked at #4 in 1991)
